Of the inventions that changed the twentieth century, few have evoked such emotion as the automobile. Not only did the car change how we travel, it quickly transformed our culture. Through the rise of the film industry in Hollywood, the car became even more prevalent.
Enthusiasts will always have a personal story about their car. Whether a passion shared with a family member, the memories surrounding the purchase of their first car, or perhaps the car they always promised themselves when fortune allowed, the reasons for ownership will always be the beginning of a fascinating conversation.
At the GAIN Group we admire the passion and commitment that is invested in a special vehicle, and we are always interested in the story it represents. It will never be just a means of transportation, but rather a celebration and an experience. The automobile, in many cases, can be considered as legitimate twentieth century art. With this in mind we set out to organize an event to celebrate the owners, their cars, and their stories.
The Vancouver Island Motor Gathering finds its roots in the European Car Picnic, an event that the GAIN Group helped to sponsor for over 15 years. An opportunity presented itself where we found ourselves in a position to take on full responsibility for the show. With the help of over 100 of the most passionate employees, we are able to present an event that showcases the automobile in all its glorious diversity, from the sublime to the wonderfully odd. Perhaps more importantly, we’ve also been able to raise some much needed money for a few very important local charities.
In 2013 we presented our first Motor Gathering, and we were pleased to raise over $52,000 for the Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island. The following year we were able to raise over $75,000 in cash donations, and over $200,000 in in-kind sponsorships. The Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation became our second supported charity at that time. In 2015 with the help of our generous sponsors, participants and spectators we raised over $118,000 in support of these charities. In 2016 along with our continued support of the David Foster Foundation, we also raised money for the Cowichan District Hospital Foundation. We welcomed 550+ show participants, and close to 10,000 visitors to the show. By the end of the afternoon we had raised $153,128 on behalf of our charity partners.
Thank-you for helping us raise $174,850! With over 540 show vehicles, over 10,000 spectators, 95 generous sponsors and over $200,000 of in-kind sponsorships, we are excited to announce the huge success of the 2017 Vancouver Island Motor Gathering!
The Concours d’Elegance events held at Amelia Island and Pebble Beach are highly regarded by enthusiasts. Over the next few years, we will strive to see the Motoring Gathering considered in similar terms, ultimately becoming one of the premier events in North America. Vancouver Island and the Pacific Northwest are home to a number of significant automobile collections, as well as individual owners in possession of historically significant automobiles. With the advantage of predictable summer weather, we look forward to seeing some of these cars at our future events.
We look forward to welcoming participants and guests back to the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit for this year’s Motor Gathering. Join us for another fun-filled family event. Located in the Cowichan Valley, the Island Circuit will provide a breathtaking backdrop for a weekend in celebration of the automobile.
